Wings of Fancy—the butterfly exhibit that has long operated at Brookside Gardens—will reopen this year after being closed last year due to ongoing renovations at the park.
The seasonal display will open to the public on July 1. It features butterflies from North America, Costa Rica, Africa and Asia, which fly among flowers.
The exhibit is designed to teach children and the general public about the role butterflies play in the ecosystem and how gardens can be designed to attract the colorful insects. The display runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July through October.
Brookside Gardens is in the process of completing renovations to the facilities’ parking and entrance areas. The renovation includes a new gatehouse, entrance signage, additional 63 parking spaces and new environmental design features such as permeable paving and rain gardens.
Renovation work has finished on the section of the park facility that impacts the butterfly exhibit, according to Melissa Chotiner, a spokeswoman for Montgomery Parks, which runs Brookside Gardens.
Brookside Gardens is a 50-acre display garden within Wheaton Regional Park, which includes a rose garden, Japanese garden, woodland walk and other features. Admission to Brookside is free, although tickets for the butterfly exhibit are $8 for ages 13 and up, $5 ages 3 to 12 and free for children 2 and younger.
