Kathleen Matthews is set to officially announce Wednesday her campaign for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District in front of the Silver Spring Metro station.

Matthews, the former news anchor for WJLA/Channel 7 and executive at Marriott International, will be the fifth candidate to officially jump into the race to replace Rep. Chris Van Hollen, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Matthews, who lives in Chevy Chase, is the wife of MSNBC political pundit Chris Matthews and left her job as chief communications and public affairs officer at Marriott last month in order to start up the campaign.

After her announcement at the Silver Spring Metro Wednesday morning, Matthews is set to visit the Kensington Park Senior Living Center and Dawson’s Market in Rockville Town Square.

Matthews will join state Del. Kumar Barve, D-Gaithersburg, state Del. Ana Sol Gutierrez, D-Chevy Chase, state Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-Takoma Park, and former Obama administration aide Will Jawando as those who have officially announced for the Democratic primary.

Former County Council member Valerie Ervin of Silver Spring told Bethesda Beat last month that she plans to run.

Political insiders have suggested that contenders for the District 8 seat are going to have to raise at least $1 million before the April 2016 primary.
