Montgomery County Public Schools Makes Changes To 2016 Schedule

Board of Education reshuffles calendar after presidential primary was moved back

Spring break for students in Montgomery County Public Schools will come a day earlier than expected in 2016 thanks to a delayed primary election day.

The school system originally approved a 2015-2016 calendar that included a teacher work day on Monday, April 4—on the back end of spring break set for March 25-April 1. And students and staff would’ve had off Tuesday, April 5, for the state’s presidential primary election.

But lawmakers in Annapolis voted to move the primary back to Tuesday, April 26, so that the first day of early voting isn’t on Easter Sunday. Gov. Larry Hogan earlier this month signed the bill making the move.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Board of Education decided to move the teacher work day set for April 4 to Thursday, March 24, which is the day before spring break. Students will not have class that day.

At least officially, spring break will remain from March 25-April 1.

Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers said the reshuffling will allow for the third marking period to end Wednesday, March 23, and let teachers complete report card grades during their professional day.

The fourth marking period will start when students return from spring break April 4.
