Business Notes: Local Companies Named ‘Best Places to Work’

Plus: Developer awards scholarship to B-CC student; Bethesda named one of the top places in the country for financial advisers

Bethesda, Chevy Chase Businesses Named “Best Places to Work”

The Washington Business Journal released its annual “Best Places to Work” list last week and several local companies made the list. The JBG Cos., a Chevy Chase-based development company, ranked No. 1 on the list of extra-large companies (those with more than 250 employees). RBC Wealth Management, a financial firm in Bethesda, came in at No. 2  and The Meltzer Group, an insurance services provider, ranked No. 4 on the list of large companies (between 50 and 249 employees). Phillips Realty Capital, a commercial real estate firm on MacArthur Boulevard in Bethesda, came in first in the medium-sized company category (25 to 49 employees). The business journal worked with Quantum queries to survey local companies on categories including “team effectiveness, trust in senior leadership and alignment with company goals.”

Developer Awards 'Smart Growth Scholarship'

The Chevy Chase Land Co. awarded Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School senior Julia Cardwell with a $5,000 "CCLC Smart Growth Scholarship." Cardwell plans to pursue a career in urban planning and environmental sustainability and will be going to Davidson College in North Carolina this fall.

The Chevy Chase Land Co. started the scholarship to commemorate its 125th anniversary and will offer it on an annual basis to B-CC students interested in architecture, engineering or land use and transportation planning. Tom Regnell, the company's president and CEO, will award the scholarship to Cardwell on Wednesday at the school's Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

Investopedia Names Bethesda Area as One of the Top Places for Financial Advisers

Investopedia, a business and financial website, ranked the combined area of Potomac, Bethesda and Chevy Chase as the fourth best place in the country for financial advisers. The website took into account the local average income and created a ratio based on the number of local financial advisers—the fewer the better. The Bethesda area’s average household income of $144,161 is the highest in the nation and its close proximity to Washington, D.C., was also listed as a positive. The article noted there’s about one financial adviser for every 260 households in the local area. Seattle, Houston and San Francisco came in above Bethesda.

Emergent BioSolutions Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for New Gaithersburg Headquarters

Emergent BioSolutions, a pharmaceutical company, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local elected officials Tuesday to celebrate the opening of its new headquarters at 400 Professional Drive in Gaithersburg. The new building added about 130,000 square feet of office space to the company’s existing facilities at the location and will provide enough space to add 133 employees by 2018, according to the county. The company received a $750,000 Economic Development Fund Grant from Montgomery County to help pay for the expansion.

“Emergent BioSolutions is an innovative company at the forefront of vaccine and therapeutic research and their expansion will not only bring additional jobs to the county, but will strengthen our position as a smart location for companies in the life sciences,” County Executive Ike Leggett said in a statement.

Update: Coakley Realty Purchases New Headquarters in Rockville

Coakley Realty, a full-service real estate firm that has for years helped The Victoria Condominium Building in Rockville Town Center secure tenants, has purchased the entire condo building, which now serve as the real estate company's headquarters. The new headquarters will allow the firm to expand its reach locally, according to company President Rory Coakley.

“We are so proud to continue our success and have the opportunity to express our loyalty within the Montgomery County area,” Coakley said in a statement.

The headquarters is located at 20 Courthouse Square in Rockville. Coakley Realty was founded in 1989 and specializes in residential and commercial real estate sales and leasing.

Editor's Note: Originally this article stated Coakley Realty had only bought a unit at The Victoria Condominium Building, in fact the real estate company has purchased the entire building and will use it as its headquarters.
