Update 1 p.m. – The post has now been "flagged for removal."
Original story – A Craiglist ad posted by someone in Gaithersburg is attempting to sell a Capital Bikeshare bike for $40.
The ad, posted on Craigslist this morning, reads, “I had found a Capital BikeShare bike about 2 months back on a basketball court. I took it home and have only used it about 3-4 times. It's been lying in my front lawn since those times and I just wanna sell it for like 35-40 bucks. I've had the bike for like 2 months so I'm sure no one is going to come looking for it. I was planning on spray painting it but never got around to do so. The bike is in great condition with obviously some regular wear and tear on the painting and body. The bike had automatic lights, 4 gears, and a built in bell. TRYING TO SELL ASAP.”
The ad is titled: “$40 bike, Excellent condition. Can’t beat that.”
Bethesda Beat emailed the poster this morning about the ad, but hasn’t received a response.
The ad was first noticed by Tim Regan, a Twitter user and future Borderstan editor, who tweeted a picture of the ad to Capital Bikeshare.
Capital Bikeshare responded via its Twitter account, “What a bargain! We are looking into it” and then added: “Passing to [operations] now. That’s still our bike.”
In a Twitter message to Bethesda Beat, Bikeshare said it's not commenting on the listing at this time, but its operations team is investigating it. The program’s heavy red bikes are designed to be durable and are available to rent for a fee at stations throughout the Washington, D.C., region.
If a Bikeshare bike is lost or stolen, the person who rented it is asked to file a theft report with the local police department and to notify Capital Bikeshare immediately. “You may be charged for the cost of recovery or replacement of the bike,” reads the program’s website.
