A road resurfacing project is resulting in temporary lane closures to East West Highway and Montgomery Avenue in downtown Bethesda.

The State Highway Administration is behind the $2.8 million project that it expects to complete by late fall.

Crews have begun working on curbs, gutters and sidewalks between Wisconsin and Connecticut avenues. The patching, grinding and resurfacing of the roads will come at the end of the project.

There will be temporary one-lane closures on the 1.5-mile stretch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and two-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

Pedestrians may need to follow signs to find safe crossing areas, according to a notice about the project from the State Highway Administration.

Improvements will be made to the traffic signals along East West Highway at Montgomery Avenue, Chelton Road, Waverly Street and Pearl Street.
