A Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School student will serve on the Montgomery County Board of Education during the next school year.
Sophomore Eric Guerci was elected Wednesday by the county’s middle and high school students to serve as the student member of the board.
Guerci received 52 percent of the vote, while his opponent Rachit Agarwal, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, received 48 percent.
The student board member can cast votes on most board issues except boundary changes, capital and operating budgets, collective bargaining, personnel issues and school closings. Guerci will receive a $5,000 scholarship for serving on the board.
Guerci is the vice president of the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association. He will replace outgoing student board member Dahlia Huh, a Clarksburg High School senior.
During her tenure, Huh weighed in on key issues such as deciding not to renew former superintendent Joshua Starr’s contract and also voted for a 20-minute later school start time for county schools, which was approved by the board.
