Montgomery County Public Libraries announced Tuesday the new Silver Spring Library nearing completion on Wayne Avenue will open on June 20.

The library will be housed in a $69.5 million, five-story, 90,000 square foot building. The library will take up the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building. Mixed-use retail and office space will be housed in the lower two floors of the building at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street.

The library will include a children’s room, computer labs, individual study rooms and even a café. Previously, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center had signed on to open an Art Center on the first two floors of the building, but that fell through in December when negotiations hit a snag. The county is in the process of finding a new tenant for that space.

Earlier this year, the county issued a request for proposals from community organizations to fill the space. The deadline for those proposals were March 17 and in particular, the county was looking for a tenant to develop public space for studios, public exhibitions and educational opportunities inside the lower floors of the library.

The building began construction in early 2013. It was designed by The Lukmire Partnership and constructed by Costello Construction.

The previous Silver Spring branch at 8901 Colesville Road closed on March 15 and since then library employees have been in the process of moving the books, materials and other supplies to the new location.
