Author of the critically acclaimed best-sellers Seabiscuit: An American Legend, and Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, the Bethesda native grew up less than a block from Bethesda Elementary School and is a 1985 graduate of Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School. While attending Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, Hillenbrand became ill and was later diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which eventually forced her to withdraw from school. In 2004 the D.C. resident published the 2004 National Magazine Award-winning article, “A Sudden Illness” chronicling her struggles with the disease in The New Yorker.
