Firefighters Monday dealt with a major natural gas leak at the new Silver Spring library, which is under construction near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street.
The gas line was struck by crews working at the site around 2:35 p.m., according to fire department spokesman Pete Piringer. Gas company crews had the leak under control about an hour later. There was no fire or reported injuries in the incident.
Buildings near the struck line were evacuated, according to Piringer, and firefighters blocked off several streets around the scene, including both Fenton Street and Wayne Avenue.
The new Silver Spring library branch is expected to open sometime this spring. The former location of the library, on Colesville Road, closed March 15 to give staff time to prepare to move to the new location.
