The state’s top tax evaders are being put on blast this month.
The Maryland comptroller’s office Thursday released its 2015 lists of the top 20 businesses and top 20 individuals that are tax “scofflaws.”
Topping the list on the business side is CTS & Associates Inc., 7101 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda. The business owes the state $1.15 million in back taxes and fees, according to the comptroller.
Omnik Dental Labs on Randolph Road in Rockville also made the list, coming in at number 14 with $178,364 in unpaid taxes and fees.
Three individuals from Montgomery County were also included in the list of individuals with large unpaid tax bills released by the comptroller’s office: Denis Putnam of Gaithersburg reportedly owes $421,556 in back taxes and fees; Francis Murray of Silver Spring owes $333,418; and Ainsley Gill of Potomac owes $259,635. They came in at sixth, 12th and 14th, respectively, on the individuals list.
The public shaming is part of the comptroller’s “Caught in the Web” program to recover unpaid taxes. The top 40 business and individual tax scofflaws collectively owe the state about $13.3 million, according to the comptroller’s office.
“The Caught in the Web program underscores a small number of Marylanders who make a conscious effort to not pay their taxes,” Comptroller Peter Franchot said in a statement. “These are not people simply down on their luck and unable to pay. These are people who have chosen to take advantage of the benefits of this great state—individuals and business owners who knowingingly thumb their noses at the vast majority of Maryland taxpayers who fulfill their legal obligations to the state.”
