Parks Making ADA Improvements To Bethesda Facility

April 8, 2015 9:40 a.m.

Montgomery Parks plans new handicapped parking spaces, sidewalks and a ramp at a local park in Bethesda.

Parks officials will present changes coming to Ayrlawn Local Park at a public meeting on April 14 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. The moves will put the park in compliance with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

The 14.3-acre park at 5652 Oakmont Avenue features a playground, softball field, baseball field, multi-use field and two tennis courts.

Parks plans to add two handicapped accessible parking spaces behind the tennis courts and another near the softball field.

The project, which Parks hopes to have completed by August, would also include three additional standard parking spaces, an accessible walkway to one of the field’s benches and a new bench and ramp near the playground, among other changes.

The ADA enhancement effort comes after a 2011 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice in which the county and Maryland-National Parks and Planning Commission agreed to improve accessibility throughout the park system.

The meeting next week is set for the YMCA Ayrlawn Program Center at 5650 Oakmont Avenue. Diagrams of the changes are available on the Parks website.
