Update – 1:50 p.m. Wednesday – Police released additional details about how a Montgomery County Police officer was injured in a pedestrian collision Tuesday afternoon in Chevy Chase.
Police said in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon that the male officer was working a secondary position as a security employee in full uniform at retail shops on Wisconsin Avenue near the Friendship Heights Metro station. Around 4:50 p.m., the officer, who was sitting in a marked cruiser, was told by a security guard from one of the stores about a suspicious Acura parked nearby on South Park Avenue.
The 30-year-old officer located the vehicle and saw a person inside, according to police. The officer watched as the vehicle drove towards Wisconsin Avenue and stopped at a red light. That's when police say the officer approached the vehicle and put his hand on the car's roof. The driver then made eye contact with the officer, accelerated the vehicle and struck the officer, police said.
The officer's hand became stuck on the car as it attempted to flee, causing him to fall on the roadway, according to police. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the collision and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said the eight-year veteran of the force was released from the hospital late last night. The officer suffered injuries to his arms and a concussion in the collision, according to police.
The vehicle fled into Washington D.C., and despite an earlier report from a police spokesman that two people had been taken into custody in D.C., police said Wednesday no one has been arrested in the case.
Police officers with the Metropolitan Police Department later located the vehicle in Northeast D.C. this morning. Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.
Police did not release the officer's name at this time.
