UPDATED: Metro Repairs Smoking Insulator In Bethesda Tunnel

Updated 10:52 a.m. — Metro officials have found and repaired the smoking insulator that drew a large fire response to two Bethesda Metro stations on Tuesday.

Reports of smoke, often caused by arcing insulators, are a frequent occurrence in the tunnel because of leaking problems with the tunnel’s roof.

Firefighters were called to the Medical Center station a little after 10:05 a.m. Scanner reports indicated an arcing insulator on one of the tracks may be located about half-way between the Medical Center and Bethesdsa stations, just south of where Woodmont Avenue breaks off from Wisconsin Avenue.

Metro said the Red Line would be single tracking as a precaution. Both stations remained open and MCFRS began downsizing its response after Metro maintenance officials began looking for the source of the problem.
