Update – 10:00 p.m. – The Bethesda Metro station has reopened after an escalator outage closed it for about six hours Tuesday.

Technicians who repaired the escalators determined the outage was caused by an earlier regional power surge that struck the D.C. area Tuesday afternoon, according to Metro. The station was closed around 3:20 p.m to fix the escalators and reopened around 9 p.m. Shuttle buses were used to transport riders to the Medical Center station.

The three massive escalators at the Bethesda station are currently being replaced as part of a long-term project. This escalator outage was not related to the arcing insulator that caused smoke in the tunnel between the Bethesda and Medical Center station earlier Tuesday.
