Bethesda Film Festival –7 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Imagination Stage, 4908 Auburn Ave., Bethesda
The Bethesda Film Festival takes over Imagination Stage this weekend. The festival highlights five short documentaries made by local filmmakers. The films range from a six-minute documentary about a college playwright who was told he would never walk or talk to the eight-minute story of Towpath Joe, the caretaker of a small island adjacent to the C&O Canal on the Potomac River. The films will be shown at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here. The 7 p.m. Friday night show is sold out.
Annual Used Book Sale – Saturday and Sunday, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, 4301 East West Highway
B-CC High School will hold its 14th annual used book sale. About 35,000 gently used hardcover and paperback books are expected to be on sale. Hardcovers are $3 and paperbacks are $2. Proceeds will benefit the school’s Parent Teacher Student Association. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the school’s cafeteria and adjoining hallways.
Israeli Dance Festival – 3 p.m. Sunday, Bullis School, 10601 Falls Road, Potomac
Over 150 dancers will participate in the Israeli Dance Festival at Bullis School on Sunday. Participating dance troupes include Avira, Hora D.C., JPDS-NC, Kesem, Kinor and Yesodot. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students at the door; or $15 for adults and $10 for students with an advance purchase.
Frederic Yonnet – 7:30 p.m. Friday, AMP by Strathmore, 11810 Grand Park Ave., North Bethesda
French jazz musician and harmonica player extraordinaire Frederic Yonnet will play the newly-opened AMP at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda on Friday night. Yonnet has toured with stars including Prince and collaborated with Stevie Wonder. During Friday’s performance, he’ll show off his harmonica skills in a variety of styles ranging from hip-hop and jazz to funk and gospel. Tickets are $35.
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra – 3 p.m. Sunday, The Music Center at Strathmore
The BSO will be joined by cellist Sol Gabetta to perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major as part of a program that will include other works by Haydn, Ravel and Strauss. The show is being billed as a way to “bring to life the lighter and darker sides of the waltz as imagined by Ravel and Strauss in pre-and post-WWI Europe.” Tickets start at $32.
