Montgomery County police announced Wednesday morning a 24-year-old Silver Spring man has been arrested in connection with the Monday night shooting of a man in Silver Spring.

Erick Ramirez, 24, of the 8300 block of Piney Branch Road, was arrested Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., in connection with the murder of Jonathan Lopez, 24, of Brentwood, Maryland, according to county police. Lopez was shot while walking near the intersection of Piney Branch Road and Dale Drive around 8:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

Lopez died early Tuesday morning at a trauma center in Washington, D.C., according to police.

Police said detectives determined Lopez was in a relationship with a woman who had a child with Ramirez. On Monday night, the woman and Lopez drove to Ramirez’s home to pick up the child. While Lopez was waiting outside in the vehicle, Lopez and Ramirez exchanged text messages, according to police. Shortly after the woman and Lopez left, Ramirez sent additional text messages, which led Lopez to return to the area near Ramirez’s home.

Ramirez confronted Lopez, shot him and then fled on foot, police said. Lopez collapsed on the scene and was later transported to the trauma center where he died.

Ramirez was arrested by police in the 4400 block of Connecticut Avenue in the District. Police are in the process off having him extradited to Montgomery County for arraignment and bond review, but did not immediately know how long that process would take.
