A website says Bethesda is the No. 7 best place to retire in Maryland.

SmartAsset, a financial data site, ranked Bethesda No. 7 in the state, one spot behind Rockville and behind other towns such as Easton, Chestertown and Annapolis.

The website said it factored in the number of doctors offices per 1,000 people, recreation centers per 1,000 people and retirement centers per 1,000 people, plus the percentage of seniors in in its rating. It found Bethesda has 4.8 doctors offices, 0.2 recreation centers and 1.2 retirement centers per 1,000 people.

It also created a tax rating for each city and town, calculating effective income and sales tax rates using $35,000 as what “a typical retiree” earns each year from retirement savings, social security or part-time employment.
“In our final analysis, we ranked each county and city on these three factors, and calculated an average ranking for each area, weighting the three factors equally. The areas with the lowest average ranking are the best places to retire,” the website said.
Bethesda received a 68.34 rating. Easton, the No. 1 Maryland place on the list, got a 74.07 rating.
Nine of the top 10 places to retire in the nation were in Florida, with ratings ranging from a perfect 100 to 97.49.
