A “glitter bomb” went off in the Rockville Library on Monday afternoon, leading to a response from Montgomery County’s HazMat team, which determined it was not hazardous.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer said on his Twitter account that the “glitter grenade” was “detonated” in the library and HazMat was called to the scene around 12:30 p.m.
Piringer said it was later determined that the glitter bomb was similar to prank letters that have gained popularity recently, according to The Washington Post.
For example, the Australian website shipyourenemiesglitter.com allows people to fill out an online form and pay $9.99 to send “The Original Glitter Bomb,” which is basically a letter filled with glitter, to a person’s address.
Roads that were closed while firefighters worked at the scene reopened around 1:30 p.m.
