Karen Lockard, the popular principal at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School (B-CC), announced Monday that she will be retiring at the end of the school year.

In a message posted on the B-CC listserv, Lockard said that after working for Montgomery County Public Schools for 38 years, including 27 years at B-CC as a teacher and administrator, “…[n]ow is the time for me to pursue other opportunities.”

She added: “I am announcing now so that the county has ample time to conduct a search to find someone worthy of serving this community. I will always be thankful that I have been part of the beautiful Baron Nation.”

Christopher Garran, an associate superintendent of MCPS, wrote in a letter to parents that Lockard will officially retire on June 30.

"As a B-CC parent, teacher, and current principal, Mrs. Lockard has shown an incredible dedication and commitment to the B-CC community," Garran wrote.

MCPS will begin the search for a new principal by holding meetings with staff, parents and students. A meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 7 p.m. in the school's cafeteria, according to Garran.
