Second MCPS Snow Day of the Week Could Mean Another Extra Day This Summer

Students should enjoy the day off because they may have to make it up in June

Montgomery County Public Schools canceled school Thursday for the second time this week as snow blanketed the region. And while that decision likely made a lot of local students happy, it also means they may have to return for an extra day in June.

The school calendar has four inclement weather days built in. After they are used up, the school system is supposed to make up additional days after the scheduled last day of school, unless it asks the Maryland State Department of Education for a waiver.

MCPS closed schools Monday due to icy conditions, which pushed the school system over the limit and meant that the school year would end June 15 instead of June 12.

With today’s school closing, that date shifts again, to possibly June 16.

Last year, the school system closed a total of 10 days, meaning it may have been forced to make up six days in June. However, MCPS applied for a waiver and the state board approved a plan allowing the school system to only make up two days.
