Montgomery County Public Schools is holding public forums designed to gather input into what qualities the community desires in a new schools superintendent.

The first forums will be held at 7 p.m. March 4 at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring and Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda.

The Board of Education is searching for a replacement for Joshua Starr, who left the post Feb. 16 . The board and Starr came to an agreement to part ways at the end of January after local media reports that four board members would not support a renewal of Starr’s four-year contract. Larry Bowers, the school system’s chief operating officer, is serving as interim superintendent until the board hires a new schools chief.

The second forums will take place at 7 p.m. March 5 at Gaithersburg High School and Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville.

MCPS said in a press release the forums are an opportunity for the public to share the “educational priorities” and “leadership qualities” that a new superintendent should have.

The school board has hired the firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to assist with the search for a new superintendent. The board hopes to find a new schools chief by July 1.
