MoCo Government Closed Sunday, Roads Remain Icy

February 22, 2015 8:05 a.m.

Montgomery County recreation centers and libraries will be closed for the second straight day on Sunday after a winter storm brought more snow than expected for much of the county.

Just less than five inches of snow was recorded in Chevy Chase on Saturday evening as the snow turned to rain and sleet.

But other areas of the county got walloped.

Most places got at least seven inches. Olney got 10, Clarksburg 12 and Damascus 13, according to the National Weather Service.

Because of the county government closure, Friday trash pick-ups that were moved back to Sunday because of the storm earlier this week will be moved back again. Anyone expecting trash and recycling pick-ups today will get them Monday.

Trash pick-ups will move back one day for the remainder of the week, with regular Friday pick-ups being made on Saturday, Feb. 28.

School buildings remain closed to any school-sponsored or community use activities.

But the Bethesda Central Farm Market in the Bethesda Elementary School parking lot (7600 Arlington Road) will open for its regularly scheduled 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. winter market hours.

The NWS is advising those driving today to remain cautious:

…HAZARDOUS TRAVELING CONDITIONS EXPECTED THIS MORNING…
THE SNOW AND ICE FROM SATURDAY HAS CAUSED DANGEROUS CONDITIONS ACROSS MANY ROADWAYS THIS MORNING. DESPITE RISING TEMPERATURES…PAVEMENT TEMPERATURES ARE MUCH COLDER DUE TO THE RECENT COLD WEATHER. THIS WILL CAUSE SNOW COVERED AND ICY ROADS THROUGH MOST OF THIS MORNING.
ANYONE TRAVELLING THIS MORNING SHOULD USE CAUTION AND ALLOW PLENTY OF EXTRA TIME TO GET TO THEIR DESTINATION. CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE LATER TODAY AS TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO RISE.
