Updated at 2:40 p.m. — About 85 firefighters were needed to put out an electrical fire in the Bradley Hills neighborhood on Wednesday.

The fire started in the basement of a two-story home at 6913 Hillmead Road a little before 11 a.m. An automatic alarm alerted the homeowner, who was at work. The homeowner asked a neighbor to check on the house and the neighbor called 911, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Piringer said a gas line likely helped the fire spread to other parts of the house through walls, ceilings and other void spaces. It sustained about $600,000 worth of damage.

The fire spread to the structure’s roof, as is evident in the video above. The residents of the home will be displaced by the damage, Piringer said.
