The National Weather Service has issued multiple weather alerts in anticipation of an arctic cold and snow system moving into the area.

The snow is expected to begin this afternoon, after 3 p.m., when the temperature reaches its high around 29 degrees. The weather service predicts the snow will continue tonight, with 10 to 20 mph winds creating below zero wind chills. Due to the snow, NWS issued a winter weather advisory from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. tonight and warns of the possibility of blizzard-like squalls.

The temperature is expected to get much colder Thursday, with a high around 15 degrees and wind chill values dropping into the negative teens. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible. The weather service issued a wind chill advisory from midnight tonight until 6 p.m. Thursday.

“An arctic cold front will push across the Middle Atlantic Region this afternoon and evening. The front will be accompanied by showers and squalls which will have the potential to produce a quick burst of heavy snow,” warns the weather service about today’s system, which could look very similar to Saturday’s squall, which knocked out power to thousands of homes and caused several traffic accidents in the area.
