The first big snow system of the year is moving into the region today and the National Weather Service is predicting it will drop between 5 to 10 inches of snow by Tuesday morning in the Bethesda area.
The weather service has issued a winter storm warning beginning at 6 p.m. tonight and continuing until noon Tuesday.
The air is expected to remain frigid during the storm, with temperatures in the teens and wind chills dropping as low as -10 degrees. The strong winds that have been blowing throughout the weekend will slow down slightly, but meteorologists are still predicting gusts between 5 and 25 mph during the snow storm.
“Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous,” warns the weather service. “Only travel in an emergency.” Visibility could be reduce to a half mile or less at times.
The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang is predicting slightly less snow than NWS, with about 4 to 8 inches of snow falling in D.C.’s northern suburbs.
Either way the evening into morning storm could lead to school cancellations or delays. That would mean a four-day weekend for local students, who have President’s Day off today.
