Regional airports record single-digit record low temperatures after a sudden snow system passed through the region

It hasn't just been cold, it has been record-breaking cold.

The National Weather Service said temperatures recorded Monday and Sunday at Washington Dulles and Baltimore Washington International airports set records.

The weather service recorded the temperature at Dulles at 6 degrees this morning, breaking the 1987 and 1963 record of 11 degrees. In Baltimore, the 5 degree temperature tied the 1905 record low. On Sunday the low of 6 at Dulles broke that day’s historical record and the 6 degree temperature yesterday in Baltimore tied the record previously set in 1943 and 1899.

Anyone who spent time outside Saturday night, Sunday or this morning experienced firsthand the biting cold. The weather service recorded wind gusts that reached 50 mph in the region Saturday night, which toppled power lines and trees. Wind chills recorded this morning in Montgomery Village by the weather service came in at -19 degrees. Pepco reported an estimated 2,000 homes in the Bethesda area without power Sunday, all of which had been restored by Monday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer shared a picture of a building on Connecticut Avenue in Aspen Hill that had its windows blown out Sunday.

Two emergency workers were seriously injured in a crash on the inner loop of the Beltway in Bethesda early Sunday morning when they were struck by a truck while assisting individuals involved in a different accident. Piringer said Monday the volunteers from the Glen Echo Fire Department were improving, but remained hospitalized.

About an inch and a half of snow fell, mostly during a sudden burst between 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday. The snow led to multiple wrecks on local roads, according to Piringer, with drivers spinning out on the Beltway, New Hampshire Avenue, East West Highway and other roads.

The blizzard-like conditions did create one positive—some interesting scenes around the area.

In Chevy Chase, a reader sent Bethesda Beat a video of youth hockey players competing on an outdoor ice rink at the Chevy Chase County Club in a scene reminiscent of a snow globe and locals shared these pictures from their neighborhoods:
