Two emergency medical workers were seriously injured in a collision on I-495 early Sunday morning when a vehicle crashed into them while they were assisting individuals involved in a different accident on the right shoulder of the road.

Maryland State Police said the two Glen Echo Fire Department volunteers—Thomas Schryver, 26 and Sydney Marshall, 19—were struck when a driver lost control of his vehicle. Both volunteers were transported to Suburban Hospital, according to police.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said Monday morning the two volunteers remain hospitalized, but are resting and “in good spirits” with their conditions improving. Piringer said via his twitter account their prognosis is good.

Police said Schryver and Marshall were assisting individuals inside a 2014 Toyota Corrolla on the right shoulder of the I-495 inner loop at River Road around 12:15 a.m. Sunday when a driver in a 2005 Ford F-150 lost control, struck the Corolla in the rear and hit the volunteers. The driver, identified by police as Maximillano Curcho, 34, of Clarksburg, was also injured in the collision and transported to Suburban Hospital.

Police said the emergency workers’ ambulance lights were on at the scene and that Curcho also struck the ambulance. The individuals inside the Toyota were transported to MedStar Hospital, but police did not release their names or the extent of their injuries.

Police said the roadway was covered in snow at the time of the collision. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, police said.

The incident was the worst in what was a sudden, and dramatic weather event Saturday evening. A snow squall swept into the area around 7 p.m., dumping about an inch of snow and bringing with it extremely cold temperatures and gusting winds up to 50 mph.

Pepco reported about 2,000 homes losing power for a period of time Saturday night into Sunday evening. All power is back on in the area Monday though, according to Pepco’s outage map.
