Update 2:15 p.m. – Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said a large fuel spill in the lower level parking garage of North Bethesda Market led to partial evacuations of the building Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the building at 11418 Rockville Pike shortly after 10 a.m. this morning. Piringer said on his Twitter account that several people were contaminated by the fuel spill and needed to be decontaminated, but none were injured and there was no fire.

Piringer said around noon the spill was contained after about 250 gallons of fuel spilled in the lower levels of the garage. Some of the fuel spilled into a nearby daycare facility, Piringer said. At about 2 p.m., HazMat operations had cleared the scene and were turning over the cleanup to the Montgomery County Department of Enivronmental Protection and the building's management.

Parts of the Market East apartments, LA Fitness and the parking garage at the building were evacuated, according to Piringer. Local streets including Executive Boulevard, Woodglen Drive and Rockville Pike near the scene were closed while HazMat crews worked, according to Piringer.
