If you’re at a happy hour in Bethesda on Friday, don’t be alarmed to see a woman dressed in a cape and Superman-like costume questioning how patrons are getting home for the evening.
SoberWoman, a concept of regional anti-drunk driving campaign Checkpoint Strikeforce, will make her way to Caddies on Cordell with a police motorcade and public address system “to announce her mission,” according to the group.
The “Anti-Drunk Driving Superhero,” is set to arrive at Caddies at 6 p.m., before making stops at Union Jack’s, Rock Bottom, Brickside and Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle.
About 42 percent of all traffic deaths over the Christmas period are alcohol-related, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. About 45 percent of crashes are alcohol-related during the New Year’s Eve holiday, compared to a 31 percent year-round average.
That’s where SoberWoman comes in:
SoberWoman will banter with Bethesda bar-goers and quiz them on how they plan to get home after partying. She will award prizes to those who demonstrate they have made advanced plans to avoid drinking and driving, such as designating a sober driver or taking transit or a cab. SoberWoman will pose for pictures and encourage the celebrating masses to share photos and her mission via social media, using hashtag #SoberWoman.
The half-masked anti-drunk driving hero will be accompanied by Montgomery County Police officers and Kurt Erickson, president and CEO of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.
Police have stepped up their DUI enforcement for the holiday season, as well as enforcement as other alcohol-related offenses such as selling alcohol to underage patrons.
