Update – 7 a.m. Tuesday – A Gaithersburg man who attempted to flee from a traffic stop in Rockville on Saturday night later died at a local hospital after his car struck a utility pole and rolled over, ejecting the man from the vehicle, police said.
Police announced Monday evening Annal Upadhyaya, 21, of Federal Court in Gaithersburg died around 3:30 p.m. Monday from the injuries he suffered in the collision.
The incident began around 9 p.m. Saturday night when police came across an unoccupied silver Honda Civic parked in the fire lane at Aspen Hill Beer and Wine on Connecticut Avenue. An officer parked behind the vehicle with his police lights on. That’s when Upadhyaya returned to the car.
The officer took Upadhyaya’s ID and determined he was driving on a suspended license, according to police. Before a tow truck could arrive to take the vehicle, Upadhyaya asked to retrieve his cell phone from the vehicle and the officer allowed him to do so, police said. Instead, Upadhyaya entered the car and drove away at high speed, according to police.
The officer lost sight of the vehicle and other officers later located it resting on its driver side on Aspen Hill Road, near Marianna Drive. Upadhyaya was found unconscious nearby on the sidewalk, police said. He was transported to a local hospital.
A preliminary investigation by police found the car began to overturn on the curve near Marianna Drive, and then struck a sign pole and a utility pole before flipping onto the driver’s side and coming to rest against an unoccupied vehicle on Aspen Hill Road.
