If there's one thing this election proved, it's that Montgomery County remains a Democratic stronghold.

There were no surprises in the county executive or County Council races where Democratic primary winners, including Ike Leggett and the four at-large council members, coasted to victory.

Leggett beat Republican challenger Jim Shalleck by an almost 2-1 margin to win a third term as county executive.

At-large County Council incumbents Hans Riemer, Marc Elrich, Nancy Floreen and George Leventhal easily beat out four Republican challengers to retain their seats. The closest challenger was Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer who racked up about 75,000 votes, but it didn't approach Riemer who received the least votes of the four incumbents with about 110,000 in total.

Other incumbents including Councilmembers Craig Rice in District 2, Nancy Navarro in District 4 and Roger Berliner in District 1 all easily defeated Republican challengers. Former Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz ran unopposed in District 3, while Del. Tom Hucker was, unopposed in his bid to move to the Council representing District 5.

The closest thing to an upset in the county was Congressman John Delaney edging out Dan Bongino in Maryland’s District 6. Barring a significant push in absentee ballots by Bongino, the incumbent beat the former Secret Service agent by a little more than 2,000 votes, although some new organizations are still listing the race as too close to call.

Jill Ortman-Fouse of Silver Spring won a close race for an open at-large seat on the Board of Education, defeating Shebra Evans, also of Silver Spring, by a 51-48 percent margin. .

Three Board of Education incumbents who now hold district-based seats – Judith Docca, Michael Durso and Patricia O’Neill – were all re-elected. O'Neill and Durso each took more than 60 percent of the vote while Docca defeated former Montgomery County PTA President Kristin Trible by 55-45 percent.
