Police and fire officials reported a gas leak near the intersection of Woodmont Avenue and Bethesda Avenue that led to road closures and evacuations of nearby buildings around 12:50 p.m.
Police and firefighters began to evacuate nearby buildings, but the leak was quickly controlled by Washington Gas Co. workers and HazMat crews who responded to the scene.
By 1:02 p.m. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer tweeted the gas leak had been shut off and crews were checking nearby businesses to make sure they're ventilated.
