Chevy Chase Liquor Store Lost $278,431 in One Year – The county-owned liquor store in Chevy Chase was the county’s only store to lose money in 2013, according to an analysis of the Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control’s operations drafted by a county consultant. The store lost $278,431.
The Chevy Chase store is located close to the District line and lacks short-term parking, reasons DLC chief George Griffin said is contributing to its losses. He said the county is looking for a new location for the store to move it to once the lease at the location is up in two years.
The county store on Hampden Lane in downtown Bethesda brought in $1,086,236—one of six stores in the county’s system to generate more than $1 million in 2013.
The figures were presented in a 96-page report that detailed the department’s struggles, which include an aging truck fleet, an inefficient delivery system, a rigid staffing model that hampers its ability to hire part-time employees at key seasonal sales times, stores in need of repairs and a lack of a consistent brand or identity for its stores. The County Council’s public safety committee is scheduled to discuss the report at its meeting this morning.
Bethesda Central Farm Market to be Closed Sunday – The always-bustling Central Farm Market at Bethesda Elementary School will be closed this Sunday because the parking lot at the school will be used as a staging area for the Bethesda Row Arts Festival. Many of the Bethesda vendors will be at the Pike Central Market at 5992 Executive Blvd. in Rockville. The market will return to Bethesda next Sunday and is scheduled to remain open through December.

Gallery Bethesda to Host Oktoberfest Celebration – The outdoor courtyard at the new Gallery Bethesda apartment building on Auburn Avenue in downtown Bethesda will be transformed into a beer garden on Oct. 25 for an Oktoberfest celebration. The free event includes music, food, beer, prizes and outdoor games. The event is open to those age 21 or older.

Bethesda’s Food Wine & Co. Releases New Fall Menus Post Chef Harr – The first menus designed by new Food Wine & Co. chef Sam Henderson are out. Henderson joined the staff at the popular Wisconsin Avenue restaurant in September after previous chef Michael Harr was let go. The menus are generally the same as they were under Harr—the truffle burger and tater tots are still there–with the addition of new seasonal items and a new s’mores dessert.
