Council members to introduce insert to Capital Improvements Program for Old Georgetown Road – Seven Montgomery County Council members are sponsoring an amendment to the five year county Capital Improvements Program that calls on a controversial section of Old Georgetown Road in White Flint to be rebuilt with four travel lanes and pedestrian and bike improvements, as called for in the area’s sector plan.

The amendment says it will result in “Old Georgetown Road being rebuilt only once, conserving and saving taxpayer dollars,” and that it “reflects the vision for pedestrian and bicyclist accessibility called for in the White Flint Sector Plan in order to help meet the aggressive mode-share goals of the plan.”

The county and state's plans for the stretch of road has generated recent controversy with White Flint advocates saying that the plan to maintain six travel lanes on the road while not installing pedestrian or bike improvements does not conform with the idea of a walkable and bikeable urban district.
