The Tavern at River Falls will remain open, despite the closing of the Market at River Falls next door.

John Grolig, who owns The Tavern at River Falls, said Monday he will continue to keep the restaurant open although his son, Jeff Grolig, is closing his market next door and stepping down from running the restaurant.

John Grolig said he will take charge of the restaurant and current employees will remain.

“There are good people over there and they will continue to do what they’ve been doing,” Grolig said.

He said the restaurant will continue to use many of the same food and beverage suppliers that it used while the market was open and he believes it can continue to be successful.

“Right now, I say [our outlook] looks pretty good, we want to keep moving forward,” Grolig said. “We’re going to try to keep doing the same thing and maybe increase our [sales] numbers.”

Grolig’s son opened the market in 1998, and it became a local hot spot for buying seafood and prepared foods.

In 2009, John Grolig, a retired D.C. firefighter and former real estate agent, purchased the restaurant next door and turned over day-to-day operations to his son.

Over the weekend, Jeff Grolig closed the market, citing the financial strain of an ongoing divorce from  his wife, Ashley, who is the majority shareholder of Renato’s at River Falls. That restaurant, adjacent to the market, will remain open.
