Steamers’ alcohol license suspended – A bright green notice pasted to the front door of Steamers says its alcohol license has been suspended for 15 days for serving alcohol outside of permitted hours. The suspension began Oct. 1 and ends on Oct. 15, according to the notice. The suspension won’t keep the Bethesda restaurant from serving food, but it will prevent the popular watering hole from serving alcohol.
Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle to host “Armed Forces Appreciation Day” Saturday – The Irish bar is taking over Cordell Avenue in Bethesda on Saturday and hosting a festival featuring 10 bands, Irish dancers, bagpipers, food and a silent auction. The event will benefit the Semper Fi Fund and Rockville’s Fisher House. Fisher House provides free lodging for families to stay locally while a relative receives medical treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, while Semper Fi Fund provides financial assistance to support injured veterans.
The event starts at 11:30 a.m. with a presentation by Congressman Chris Van Hollen followed by a pipes and drum march on Cordell and Woodmont avenues, followed by the closing of Cordell in front of the restaurant for the festival, which takes place until 7 p.m.
Cheesesteaks debut at Taylor Gourmet – Fans of the sandwich have new steak options at Taylor Gourmet in Bethesda. The restaurant unveiled its three new cheesesteaks Wednesday. There’s a basic beef ribeye with American or provolone cheese with grilled onions and mushrooms; a sandwich that’s dressed with cherry pepper mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and red onion; and an Italian-style version with marinara sauce and pepperoncini. The sandwiches cost $10 each. You can substitute chicken for the beef in any of the sandwiches. The subs received a nice review by Tim Carman in The Washington Post.
La Madeleine announces opening at Downtown Crown – The openings continue at the Downtown Crown development off Sam Eig Highway in Gaithersburg. Next up is La Madeleine. The French café chain will open Oct. 16, marking the company’s third location in Montgomery County. In September, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the seafood restaurant Coastal Flats and Venti Tre Modern Italian all opened at the mixed-use community.
Macon Bistro and Larder’s new dinner menu – The French and Southern restaurant in Chevy Chase, D.C., that opened in May released a new fall menu Tuesday, which includes duck a l’orange, pork chop with pickled maitaki and apple rosemary puree, and a flat iron steak with pomme frites. A restaurant spokeswoman said in an email about the new menu “the old favorites are there along with some new dishes.” Bethesda Magazine food editor Carole Sugarman wrote in a recent review that she enjoyed the restaurant, noting that the “the food is gracefully executed and the setting in the historic Chevy Chase Arcade is charming.”
