UPDATE: MCFRS Evacuates Bethesda Homes After Propane Tank Leak

September 15, 2014 12:05 p.m.

(Updated at 1:50 p.m.) MCFRS and B-CC Rescue Squad crews evacuated homes in the area of Fairfax Road on Monday because of a leak in a 1,000-gallon propane tank.

Crews were called to the area at about 11:50 a.m. for the report of a gas tank struck on a home construction site.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said homes were evacuated just after 12 p.m. and several neighborhood streets in Edgemoor were closed off (including parts of Fairfax, Exeter, Exfair, Denton and Glenbrook Roads, plus Hampden Lane) as a Hazmat team looked for the leak.

Around 1 p.m., Piringer said crews had secured the leak and plan to burn off the remaining gas, which could be more than 400 gallons. Almost an hour later, MCFRS said all but three homes on Fairfax Road could be reoccupied.

MCFRS set up an evacuation zone on Fairfax Road, between Denton Road and Hampden Lane and on Glenbrook Road between Hampden Lane and Wessling Lane. Those roads are also closed. The rest of the clean-up may take a few more hours.
