Weekend Events: Maker Faire, Chessiefest at Grapeseed

Plus: Breast in Show premieres in Gaithersburg

Silver Spring Maker Faire – Sunday – Silver Spring Civic Building

Flying machines, robots, crafts, games, 3D printers and more will be part of Silver Spring’s Maker Faire on Sunday. The event is a do-it-yourself free festival that will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at Veterans Plaza and the Silver Spring Civic Building. Last year, Kid Musuem held a “mini Maker Faire” that attracted about 12,000 people. This year’s event features activities like boat building, rocketry challenges, infrared camera demos and live music performances.

“Breast in Show” – Friday, Saturday, Sunday – Arts on the Green, 311 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg

A live stage musical about five people diagnosed with breast cancer premieres Friday night in Gaithersburg. “Breast in Show” contains mature themes not recommend for children under the age of 13. The show runs through Sept. 27 on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m., while Sunday afternoon shows start at 2 p.m. at the Arts Barn.

Chessiefest – Saturday afternoon – Grapeseed, 4865 Cordell Avenue, Bethesda

Try unlimited oysters, bay rays, clams, smoked bluefish and more at Grapeseed’s celebration of Chesapeake Bay seafood. Tickets to the event are $30 and it runs from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the restaurant’s Cordell Avenue location.

Ana Popovic – Friday – Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club

Blues singer Ana Popovic takes the Bethesda Blues and Jazz stage Friday night to perform. This year she was nominated the “Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year” by The Blues Foundation. Tickets are $25 and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Burmese Cuisine presentation – Sunday – Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda

John Tinpe, the former co-owner of Burma Restaurant in D.C., which closed last year, will provide a history of Burmese cuisine and dining customs during a presentation sponsored by The Culinary Historians of Washington. The presentation will include information on sago, coconut milk, curries, noodle and meat dishes. The free event takes place Sunday at the Regional Services Center and runs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
