Montgomery County Public Schools announced Wednesday that 133 local students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

Rockville’s Richard Montgomery High School led the way with 34 students being selected as semifinalists, while Silver Spring’s Montgomery Blair High School followed with 32 semifinalists and Thomas S. Wootton in Potomac had 21 students selected.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selects about 16,000 students as semifinalists each year from a pool of about 1.5 million entrants across the country. The semifinalists scored the highest on the PSAT/NMSQT, which is a standardized test students take prior to the SAT, in their state.
