Week Ahead: County Council Returns; White Flint Naming Meeting

Plus: Expect a cooler, possibly rainy week

County Council returns – The Montgomery County Council returns Tuesday from its August recess. Its agenda includes discussion of a bill that would limit some employers’ ability to conduct criminal background checks.

Naming White Flint – Thursday is the deadline to RSVP for a public meeting to come up with names for the developing White Flint area. Developers are seeking community input on what the area should be called for business and marketing purposes. The meeting takes place Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Bethesda Streetsense office, 3 Bethesda Metro, No. 140.

Weather – Expect cooler temperatures this week and rain. Tonight we’ll see a chance of showers after 8 p.m. with a high near 76, according to the National Weather Service. On Tuesday there’s a 50 percent chance of showers with a high near 78 and a nighttime low of 64. A mostly cloudy Wednesday with a high near 79, then more showers possible Thursday with a high near 85. Showers also possible Friday, with a high of 76.

White Flint plans – The White Flint Downtown Advisory Committee meets Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the Bethesda North Conference Center to consider updates on beautification, development of a streetscape plan and the White Flint district website.

School Board meets – The Montgomery County Board of Education meets Tuesday at 10 a.m. The agenda includes an update on the opening of schools and discussion of 2016 budget interests.

Chevy Chase Town Council meets – The council meets on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The agenda includes discussion of a report on projected Purple Line ridership and a RainScapes rebate program to help landowners reduce stormwater runoff from their properties.

New library hours – Montgomery County officials will announce new library service hours Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at a press conference at the Rockville Memorial Library.

Ride On changes – New bus schedules are in effect for several Montgomery County bus routes. Officials say the changes more accurately reflect actual travel times. Chevy Chase Trash and Treasures – Chevy Chase offers bulk trash pickup Saturday and Sunday, along with some alternatives to the trash pile. The town office will collect books for Friends of the Library, Montgomery County on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. During the same hours, the Lawton Center Parking Lot will host A Wider Circle, collecting clothes, beds and furniture; Shred-It, for document shredding and National Reclamation, collecting electronic equipment.
