Weekend Events: Art openings, Brazilian Bash

Gallery Openings – Friday, Saturday, Sunday – VisArts at Rockville

VisArts at Rockville hosts three new exhibits. Fire from the Forge is a retrospective of the metal works of Korean-American artist Komelia Okim. An opening reception is set for Friday from 7-9 p.m. On Sunday, Okim will give an artist talk at 2 p.m. Intimate Waterscapes finds beauty in a polluted urban creek through the eyes of photographer Julius Kassovic. An opening reception and artist talk is set for Friday from 7-9 p.m. And Songs of the Earth presents recent works from Studio 55.  Gallery hours are 12-8 p.m. Friday, 12-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The free exhibits run through Oct. 5.

Open Mic at the Mansion – Friday – Kentlands Mansion

Step into the spotlight at the First Friday Open Mic Night at the Kentlands Mansion. All (unplugged) styles of music, poetry, performance and comedy (keep it clean, folks) are welcome. Baby grand and pianist are included. So is a cash bar, but bring that ID. The event costs $10 and takes place from 8-11 p.m. at 320 Kent Square Rd. in Gaithersburg.

Plank & Rose – Saturday – Pike & Rose

Rise and shine at Pike & Rose’s outdoor yoga event, Plank & Rose, Saturday morning on Grand Park Avenue. The free class will be taught by an instructor from the soon-to-open Sport & Health club. A water station will be available. The first 100 attendees receive a complimentary Pike & Rose yoga mat. The event gets under way at 8:30 a.m. Go to pikeandrose.com for details.

Brazilian Independence Day Bash – Saturday – Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club

Celebrate your independence Brazilian style with bands Nation Beat and Alma Tropicalia as they present a Brazilian Journey from Rio to Recife. Performances include maracatu drumming, psychedelic samba and a Brazilian dance class from 7-8 p.m. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. For more information, check out the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club.
