Denizens Brewing in Silver Spring

Patrons of Denizens Brewing Co. can soon look forward to drinking beer brewed on site at the restaurant on East West Highway in Silver Spring. Denizens has been open for more than a month, but the beer served to customers is brewed off-site. Brewery operations at the facility began this past weekend, but the beers from the brewery won’t be ready for about a month. Once fully operational, the brewery plans to produce beer for the restaurant as well as for sale to area restaurants. Denizens co-owner Emily Bruno said the setup is capable of brewing 1,500 to 2,000 barrels per year, which would make it the largest brewery operation in the county. Bruno said the restaurant plans to brew a Rye IPA, a Bohemian pilsner, a porter and five to 10 seasonal beers. Jeff Ramirez, another co-owner who previously worked as a brewer for Mountain Sun Pubs & Breweries in Boulder, Colo., is the brewmaster at Denizens.

Spotluck Launches Bethesda Row Hub

The local dining discount app Spotluck, which was founded by Bethesda residents, now includes Bethesda Row-area restaurants. The expansion is the latest “node” for the business that launched in June with only Rockville Town Square restaurants. Now the app wheel includes nodes for Rockville, Woodmont Triangle and Bethesda Row. The app allows users to spin a wheel that includes locally owned restaurants in a specific area, which are offering discounts ranging from  about 15 percent to 30 percent. The discounts are based on algorithms that account for how busy restaurants are at certain times, so discounts are likely to be larger on Tuesday evenings than Friday nights, according to its co-founder Cherian Thomas.

Under Armour Can’t Entice Durant, Who Stays with Nike

It’s been eight years since NBA basketball star Kevin Durant has worn the green of Montrose Christian School in Rockville, but it seemed like the stars were aligned for the Maryland native’s return to the region. The rumors (or perhaps dreams of local basketball fans) went something like this: Durant signs a big new sponsorship with Baltimore-based Under Armour and then, after his contract is up with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016, he signs with the retooled Washington Wizards to cement his local legacy and possibly bring a championship to D.C. Well, according to the Baltimore Sun, the first part of that equation is null because Durant has resigned with Nike, despite a 10-year, $265 million to $285 million offer from Under Armour. Nike matched or exceeded the offer, although the specifics of the Nike deal aren’t known, according to the Sun. Whether the local star will return to his hometown is likely to remain a question until 2016.
