City of Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade – Monday – Olde Towne
Gaithersburg’s annual parade celebrates its 76th year on the streets of Olde Towne this year. The rain or shine parade begins at 1 p.m. and features antique cars, ethnic dance groups, fire trucks, high school marching bands and community groups. Parking is available at the garage located at the corner of Olde Town and Summit avenues and a shuttle bus is also available from the Lakeforest Shopping Center.
Glen Echo Labor Day Art Show – Saturday, Sunday, Monday – Glen Echo Park
The 44th Glen Echo Labor Day Art Show brings together 250 artists from the Mid-Atlantic region who will be selling artwork ranging from furniture to paintings to jewelry. Admission to the show is free and it runs at the park from noon to 6 p.m. each day this Labor Day weekend.
Kensington Labor Day Parade – Monday – St. Paul Park, Armory and Howard avenues
The 47th annual Kensington Labor Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Park and will feature local marching bands, equestrian show groups, dance groups, floats and community ambassadors. After the parade, a neighborhood festival will tkae place on Armory and Howard avenues.
Bake Bethesda a Pie Contest – Sunday – Bethesda Central Farm Market
It’s back for a fifth year! The Bethesda Central Farm Market is challenging local bakers to submit their best sweet or savory pie as part of this contest that serves as a fundraiser for the Manna Food Center. While registration for bakers is now closed, audience members can sample the pies by making a small donation to the food bank. Judging of the pies begins promptly at 10 a.m. at the market that’s located at 7600 Arlington Rd. in Bethesda.
The Rat Pack Together Again! – Saturday – Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club
Tony Sands performs as Frank Sinatra, Johnny Petillo as Dean Martin and Geno Monroe plays Sammy Davis Jr. in this group’s cover of the Rat Pack Saturday night at Bethesda Blues and Jazz. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $40 per person.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – Saturday – Music Center at Strathmore
The country-rock band that recorded a hit version of “Mr. Bojangles” in 1970, will take the Music Center stage at 8 p.m. The evening begins with a party on the patio starting at 6:30 p.m., but make sure to give yourself time if you plan on taking the Metro, the Bethesda and Medical Center stations are closed for track work over Labor Day weekend and buses will be running at the stations. Tickets are between $30 and $50.
