Montgomery County firefighters closed a portion of Quince Orchard Road between Route 28 and Great Seneca Highway Thursday morning in Gaithersburg after a 4-inch gas line began leaking around 9:40 a.m.

Firefighters initially planned to evacuate the area, according to fire department spokesman Pete Piringer, but instead have asked area residents to shelter in place while the leak is fixed. Gas company crews were en route to the site, according to Piringer.

The roads were closed as a precautionary measure.
