Chef Peter Chang gained notoriety in the late 2000s not only for his wonderful Chinese food, but also for his mysteriousness.

In 2007, after receiving favorable reviews from local food critics for his Szechuan cuisine at three different restaurants in Northern Virginia, he disappeared, resurfacing in 2008 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Then he was spotted in Charlottesville, then Atlanta, then was found opening another restaurant in 2011 in Charlottesville. The search for Chang reached such a fever pitch in 2010 that he was the subject of a New Yorker article by Calvin Trillin titled “Where’s Chang?”

Now the esteemed chef who got his start in the area working at the Chinese Embassy will open his sixth restaurant at Rockville Town Square. Federal Realty, the owners of the Rockville development, announced Tuesday that Chang’s new restaurant will open in early 2015.

It will take up a 3,100 square-foot space at the development and offer some of Chang’s signature dishes such as Peter Chang’s duck in stone pot and grandma’s steamed pork belly.

This is the first Maryland location for Chang, who currently has several restaurants in Virginia, including spots in Fredericksburg, Williamsburg and a Richmond suburb.
