Washington Gas has received the final approval from the county to construct a 145-foot communications tower at its property on Nebel Street in White Flint.

Friends of White Flint, a local business and resident partnership, wrote that the company can now pull building and construction permits in the next 30 days to construct the tower.

The tower will be located at the center of the business’ property at 11801 Nebel Street. It’s designed to improve the communications of the company’s workers, particularly during emergencies, according to Friends of White Flint.

The tower was met with some concern from local residents and developers who said the large monopole structure would disrupt the landscape of a redeveloped White Flint, but because the property is zoned industrial there was little opponents could do about the proposal.

Part of the tower may be leased to cell companies, according to a 2013 report by Bethesda Now.
