A total of 2,864 new students will enter Montgomery County Public Schools this school year, continuing an upward enrollment trend present in the county since 2007, according to a Washington Post report.
The spike is the largest since 2000, reported the paper, but is being offset by new portable classrooms, a new elementary school in Clarksburg and renovations at schools in Silver Spring and Germantown.
School officials told the paper that part of the reason for increased enrollment may be that families have been remaining in the county since the recession while others are moving into the area and since 2007 more students have moved from private to public schools than in the past.
The total school enrollment for the upcoming school year is projected to be 154,153, according to the report.
