Maybe hold off on buying those shoes you’ve been looking at until later this month. Comptroller Peter Franchot announced Friday that Maryland’s tax-free shopping week will take place from Aug. 10 to Aug. 16.

The event enables Maryland residents to purchase certain clothing and footwear items without being charged the state’s 6 percent sales tax.

“Each year this initiative helps Maryland families and gives large and small retailers a boost in these financially challenging times,” Franchot said, in a statement. “All hard-working Maryland moms and dads deserve this annual tax break as they prepare to send their children back to school.”

The tax-free week was designed to align with the period when parents are outfitting their kids to head back to school, which is the second biggest shopping season for retailers in the state, according to Maryland Retailers Association President Patrick Donoho.
