The Montgomery County Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to eliminate its district-funded credit cards and approved policy changes designed to increase oversight of board-level spending.
Board members will now receive a per diem allowance when traveling to conferences and will go through a new process for approving local events members can attend. The changes take effect immediately.
“I am pleased that the Board has approved these changes and has affirmed their commitment to being good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” panel President Phil Kauffman said in a press statement.
A committee composed of three board members recommended the changes in response to reports of questionable spending practices by certain board members.
In addition to eliminating the credit cards, the board approved a policy to reimburse members for meals directly related to board business and also agreed to publish their expense reports in publicly available board agenda packets.
